In recent years, theoretical ideas for the transformation of the building sector towards regenerative practices have increasingly been translated into real-world construction projects. In particular, construction with timber has emerged as a crucial pillar of this transformation. The forestry and timber industries have taken initial steps towards models of sustainable and regional processing, and planners are acquiring relevant competencies to design and execute timber construction at scales ranging from demonstration projects to high-rise buildings.
Bauhaus Earth is pleased to be leading a two-year research project on regenerative and circular construction in the Berlin-Brandenburg region. The Holz-Lehm-Hybrid [HLH] project (in English “Wood-Earth-Hybrid”) investigates novel nature-based building components and techniques in the context of a demonstration building project in Berlin. It focuses on simplified construction techniques, possibilities for further minimizing the environmental costs of construction, and the performance of regenerative building components beyond wood.
Holz-Lehm-Hybrid: Living Lab for Regenerative and Circular Building in Berlin-Brandenburg
HLH is designed as a living lab that prototypes and monitors regenerative building components at the building scale, embedded into the redevelopment and expansion of an office building in Berlin-Weißensee. The building components include: re-used concrete slab foundations, timber floor slabs, timber fire walls, load-bearing earth block masonry, and timber-earth-hybrid ceilings. All components follow the common goals of increasing regionality, minimizing the use of primary energy and materials, and optimizing the dismantling and reuse potentials of each component.
The project is a collaboration of Bauhaus Earth (research lead), B&O Bau (developers), sauerbruchhutton (architects), the Industrieverband Lehmbaustoffe e.V (industry grouping) and the Landesbeirat Holz Berlin-Brandenburg (state advisory board). Next to testing and monitoring, the project will include comprehensive documentation and communication of the research findings through online publications and a permanent exhibition. Training opportunities, showcases, and conferences will communicate findings and outcomes over the next two years. The project is funded by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU).

Holz-Lehm-Hybrid: Reallabor für regeneratives und zirkuläres Bauen in Berlin-Brandenburg
In den letzten Jahren wurde der theoretische Rahmen der Transformation des Bausektors hin zu regenerativen Praktiken zunehmend in reale Bauprojekte umgesetzt. Insbesondere das Bauen mit Holz hat sich als eine entscheidende Säule der Transformation herauskristallisiert. So haben die Forst- und Holzwirtschaft erste Schritte in Richtung einer nachhaltigen, regionalen Verarbeitung von Holzbaustoffen unternommen und Planer*innen entsprechende Kompetenzen für die Planung und Ausführung nachhaltiger Konstruktionen erworben.
Bauhaus Erde leitet ein zweijähriges Forschungsprojekt zum regenerativen und kreislauffähigen Bauen in der Region Berlin-Brandenburg. Das Projekt Holz-Lehm-Hybrid [HLH] untersucht im Rahmen eines Demonstrationbauvorhabens in Berlin Möglichkeiten, einfache Baukonstruktionen wiederzuentdecken, die Umweltkosten des Bauens weiter zu minimieren und die Leistungsfähigkeit regenerativer Bauelemente detailliert zu untersuchen.
Im Rahmen der Sanierung und Erweiterung eines Bürogebäudes in Berlin-Weißensee ist das Projekt als Reallabor konzipiert, in dem regenerative Bauelemente im Gebäudemaßstab erprobt und überwacht werden. Zu den Bauteilen gehören: wiederverwendete Betonplatten als Fundamente, Holzbodenplatten, Holzbrandwände, tragendes Lehmsteinmauerwerk und Holz-Lehm-Hybriddecken. Alle Komponenten verfolgen die gemeinsamen Ziele, die Regionalität in der Lieferketten zu erhöhen, den Einsatz von Primärenergie und Materialien zu minimieren und die Rückbau- und Wiederverwendungspotenziale der einzelnen Komponenten zu optimieren.
Das Projekt ist eine Zusammenarbeit von Bauhaus Erde (Forschungsleitung), B&O Bau (Bauherrin), sauerbruchhutton (Architekt*innen), dem Industrieverband Lehmbaustoffe e.V und dem Landesbeirat Holz Berlin-Brandenburg. Neben der Erprobung und dem Monitoring zielt das Projekt auch auf eine umfassende Dokumentation und Kommunikation der Forschungsergebnisse durch Online-Publikationen und eine Dauerausstellung. Fortbildungsangebote, Schaustellen und Konferenzen werden die Projektkommunikation während der gesamten Projektlaufzeit unterstützen. Das Projekt wird von der Deutschen Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) gefördert.
